Hi Baby Max,
That was the first time I got to address you by name in this blog- what fun! So, you were born on Monday and today is Friday, and thus it's time to get your birth story written down before it is lost in a fog of sleep deprivation.
You were a week past due on Monday, with the threat of an artificial induction coming on Thursday, so your Mommy went into aggressive maneuvers. She had her membranes swept on Monday morning, which is all we need to say about that, and then had a pregnancy-inducing massage at lunchtime. One or both of those two things worked, and by the time I got home from an appointment it was almost go time. We went over to the farm to visit your big brother Sammy for a minute, driving the car with the infant carseat in the back. We went for a little walk in the snow, and planned to bring Sammy back home around 5:00. Since we didn't have Sammy's carseat, your Gransmother Ceci drove Sammy back in her car. We were going over the road to our house when your Mommy said "Why are there so many bumps in the road?"- a road she had driven hundreds of times already this winter. I drove into the garage as gently as possible, and when your Mommy walked over the doorstep out of the garage I saw her take off like a shot for the house. She probably had not moved that quickly in six months! It turns out her water broke taking that step through the door, and you were truly on your way.
We were very lucky that your big brother Sammy had gotten a ride home, since we could take off for the hospital right away. We had been warned that the birth of a second child happens much quicker than a first, and that turned out to be really true. We got to the hospital around 5:30, and you were born at 9:10! A big contrast to your big brother, who Mommy labored with for 21 hours. The bad part was that is was so fast she didn't get to really use her Hypnobirthing techniques, and wasn't in the same kind of zone. She felt the whole process a lot more intensely this time around. She labored in the birthing tub, on a birthing stool, and finally on the bed. Despite not being in the Hypnobirthing trance, there was not any yelling or screaming, just quiet concentration most of the time. Although at one point she did ask Molly the midwife to use the vacuum to pull you out, but was told "Nope, you are going to do this yourself." So, no drugs, no tools, just good old-fashioned pushing, and you were born! You came out blue and with the longest umbilical cord Midwife Molly has ever seen, but in a moment you were yelling and awake, with a head of dark hair and bloodshot eyes from all that pushing. In other words, a good looking kid!
You had your first visitors an hour later, when both sets of grandparents came to visit (quickly). After that we were moved to a different room and a couple days of rest and recovery began, which for me meant eating bottomless pudding cups and filling endless cups of juice for Mommy. Everyone at the hospital were great, especially our nurse Becky who was with us through the whole birth process. You had more visitors over the next couple of days, and lots of rest, until it was time to take you home. The carseat we had brought for you was too loose, but luckily we had a spare one at home which I retrieved and brought back to the hospital. And with that, you were home, your brother was home, and we were a family of four for the first time!

Tick tock
Dear baby-to-be,
When your brother was born we took the due date as a firm schedule, and got caught out at a brewpub when Sam decided it was Go Time a week before he was due. Having been fooled once, we have treated your due date as very flexible. We have had a hospital bag packed for weeks, relatives on standby day and night, the nursery prepared, and the infant car seat installed. And we have waited. Your Mommy had a checkup where they told her you were sitting low and could go at any moment. Your due date was Monday Feb. 28th, so the weekend before we made no plans, didn't go anywhere, and waited. Saturday passed, and Sunday. It was a very boring weekend.
And we have been waiting since. We thought maybe you were looking forward to being born on a Leap Year, so waited some more. Tuesday, Wednesday. I kept going to work for most of the time, when Jess wasn't too tired to watch your brother. Everyone has been very understanding, but it's getting a little weird. Thursday, Friday. We decided to challenge you by going out to an adult dinner and going out with friends on Saturday night, figuring you wouldn't be upstaged. Still nothing. It's now Sunday night, almost one week past your due date, and you seem in no mood to leave your snug little home.
At her Friday checkup your Mommy was told that an induction would be looming on Thursday if you don't make a move. She really, really does not want that. So we are reduced to old wives' tales of eating spicy foods and driving down bumpy roads. Is this really what we have to resort to? I know you must be having a ball in there, but it's time to move on and move out. Each night I go to sleep with a phone close at hand, car keys in my coat, and the feeling that This Is The Night. Each morning I wake up and think Huh, That Wasn't The Night. But c'mon, it's time. Let's get this show on the road. How about tonight?

A comedy of errors
Hi Huntling,
You are supposed to be emerging any day now, so we have been doing the typical things parents do to prepare for an infant: get out the car seat, pack a hospital bag, arrange care for your big brother, and begin a major remodeling project. The remodeling we will get to some other time. However, on Saturday we got to test out all our preparations.
We failed pretty miserably.
The plan for the event is to have your grandparents watch your brother, and me to take your Mommy to the hospital. No big deal, right? Your grandparents live just down the road, and the hospital is only a couple miles away. However, on Saturday your Mommy started feeling like it might be Go Time, so I whipped out the phone to call the Grandparents. No dice, they are at a movie. OK. So then, Mommy will drive herself to the hospital, and I will come meet her after I find someone to watch Sam. She hops in the car, which promptly won't start. Oh right, we had been meaning to replace that battery. So, yank the carseat out, let Mommy take the other car, and Sammy and I spent some good bonding time jump-starting a Prius, then going to the dealership for a battery replacement.
Odds are, you would have been born by the time I actually made it to the hospital. This was not an encouraging test. However, I'm looking at it like a shakedown run. The grandparents are on high alert now, and both cars are ready to go. I'm assuming that the real event will go much smoother. Make sure you give us some advance warning though, OK?

Sibling Class
Hi baby kid,
We took your big brother to a New Sibling class at the hospital today. He learned about changing a diaper, putting you into a wrap, and holding you. He got to practice on a doll, which he dropped immediately when he had a chance to drink orange juice instead. So, we'll be careful to not offer him any juice when he's holding you! We also took a tour of the Birth Center where you will be born, unless something really crazy happens. Your big brother seems pretty interested in helping out when you arrive. He is very excited to teach you how to swim, he has mentioned that many times.
In other news, Mommy went to another checkup today, where they confirmed that you have been having a great time poking her with your feet. We can clearly see parts of you pushing around inside there, making Mommy's tummy into all sorts of strange shapes. We can't wait to meet you- the due date is in four weeks, but it could be any time now!

Down
Hey Huntling,
I want my jacket back! Your mom is now big enough, and the weather is cold enough, that she can't fit into any of her coats to stay warm. So my big poofy down jacket has been appropriated for you. I hope you are enjoying it. One some really cold days I imagine how nice it would be to have the extra insulation, but I think you need it more than me. But remember, once you emerge, you have to wear your own jacket, OK?
